As you know, we launched our iPhone app reviewer in June with Allah Made the Word iPhone app as they sponsored the 3rd Annual Summer Islamic Reading Challenge to include Canadian kids, alhumdulilah. By bringing Aya on a contributor to American Muslim Mom, I won’t have to turn down any more app review requests…AND she’ll force me to compliment each of her iPhone recommendations with an Android post, just like her iPhone App Ramadan list. 
Hubby and I have been a proud Droid users since last Ramadan, so the first 5 apps listed below have been apart of my phone since its first week. Please enjoy what my girls and I believe are
Top 5 Android Apps Every Muslim Should Have
- Adhan Alarm – Now during Ramadan, it’s much easier to check my droid then to wait for one of our laptop or computer screens to pull up. It works perfectly while we’re out and traveling locally and internationally. Switching time zones with the available qiblah compass works ideally too.
- Quran Android – Used daily, a must-have Android app. I live with it day and night during my breaks as well–perfect for any Muslim woman.
- Asma’ al-husna – We downloaded this last year when we had our Ramadan 99 Names of Allah challenge. With Arabic, English translation and Qur’anic tafsir to support the beautiful display and nasheed, this is something we always listen to and recite with. InshaAllah, our challenge to learn all names continues…
- Qizz’Islam – Something we love playing with our extended Muslim family and friends. It’s a great ice-breaker whenever we meet new Muslim families with kids as it guarantees a fun educational past-time. While we’ve mastered the entire quiz, we still keep this app around because it’s something that creates lasting memories whenever and where ever we travel when Muslims are around.
- English >> Arabic – This app is used to translate English words, phrases, and sentences into the Arabic language, not transliterated Arabic. So, this forces my girls and I to read, write and speak Arabic more fluently. Not perfect in its dialect, but it serves as a good enough basis while we traveled to Egypt and Gaza; and haven’t found a reason to uninstall it yet.
All apps were available to me from my Smartphone’s Android Market.
The truth is, I’m so busy I have my daughters download all my apps, and they play around with it long enough to figure things out before they hand over my droid to tell me if it’s worth keeping or not. I let them go through the practice round to figure out the most logical, easiest way for me to use the things I want it to do.
As a frequent reader, you will know that I do not take well to useless games, or except idle time-wasters. So, any recommendations from my family and I will be strictly to to simplify and/or help you live a more productive life…educational apps are a big hit with us too!
